How to compare Australian university offers

A ranking is only one line of a much bigger picture. Here is a calmer way to weigh up two or three offers side by side.

When two or three offers arrive, families often reach straight for the ranking table. Rankings can be useful, but they answer a narrow question. The better question is: which offer gives this student the best environment to do well and to move toward their goals?

Look beyond the ranking

  • Course structure: subjects, majors, flexibility to change direction, and practical or placement components.
  • Entry and progression: whether the offer is direct or via a pathway, and what is required to progress each year.
  • Location and cost: living expenses, travel, and whether the city suits the student.
  • Support: academic support, wellbeing services, and the size of classes.
  • Outcomes that matter to the student: internships, industry links and graduate pathways in their field.

Read the conditions carefully

Offers are often conditional. Check the English requirement, any results still to be finalised, the acceptance deadline, and the deposit and refund terms. A slightly lower-ranked offer with a cleaner pathway and stronger support can be the wiser choice for the right student.

Acceptance deadlines and deposit terms differ between institutions and can be strict. Confirm the current terms in your offer letter before deciding.
