How early should you prepare for an Australian secondary school application?

Timing is one of the most common questions parents ask. Here is a realistic guide to when to start, and what to prepare along the way.

For most families, the honest answer is: earlier than you think, but not so early that you cannot make a considered decision. Popular schools, selective programs and boarding places can fill well ahead of the intake year, and some assessments are only offered on fixed dates. Planning backwards from the intended start date is the most reliable way to avoid disappointment.

A general timeline

  • 18-24 months ahead: shortlist school types (government, Catholic, independent) and locations; understand fees and entry points.
  • 12-18 months ahead: register interest, prepare English evidence where required, and book any entrance assessments.
  • 6-12 months ahead: submit applications, prepare supporting documents, and plan for interviews.
  • 3-6 months ahead: compare offers, accept a place, and begin enrolment and pre-departure steps.

These windows shift depending on the student's year level, the state, and whether the student is applying from overseas. Younger students and highly sought-after schools generally need more lead time.

What to prepare early

  • Recent school reports and academic records, translated where needed.
  • Evidence of English proficiency if the school requires it.
  • A short profile of the student's interests, strengths and goals.
  • A realistic budget covering tuition, living and any boarding costs.

Entry requirements and assessment dates vary by school and change over time. Always confirm the current details directly with the school before you rely on them.
